Stress is a modern day epidemic.  It can impact on cognitive function, physical performance and overall health.

"Stress causes or worsens 95% of all illness" (Dr Mark Hyman, leading expert in Functional Medicine)

Chronic stress, living in "emergency mode" or "fight and flight", affects many systems within the body manifesting in :

  • sleep disturbance
  • muscle loss (the body can metabolise its own muscle mass)
  • mood changes, anxiety and depression
  • altered immune function
  • fatigue
  • reduce HRV (Heart Rate Variability an indicate for health)
  • weight gain
  • pain

There are many different sources of stress (mental, physical, emotional, spiritual).  However, living with technology appears to have a big impact on many of us, triggering our stress response.  The term "concept shift" (D Chowdre, H Martin) refers to the constant change of focus during our daily lives; from telephone calls, to e-mails, to text messaging, to mobile alerts.  Our brains are not actually wired to incessantly multitask, trying to do too many things at once places an excess amount of stress on the brain.  These constant distractions and urgencies cause the release of cortisol and dopamine, deplete serotonin and use up ATP (energy molecules).  As a result we can become anxious, stressed, foggy and tired.

In our busy lives, it is important that we regularly give our bodies an opportunity to "rest, digest, relax and restore".

"You should sit and meditate for 20 minutes a day, and if you are too busy you should meditate for an hour" (Zen saying)
